Higgins Lake, Michigan

Situated in the center of Northern Michigan, Higgins Lake is the ideal vacation destination for those seeking a beautiful lake away from the bustle of the city, but not too far from civilization. Whether you enjoy kayaking, fishing, tubing, or simply a relaxing day at the beach, Higgins Lake has it all. Additionally, Higgins Lake is renowned for its natural beauty and crystal-clear water. In July of 2017, it was voted the best inland lake in Michigan by the readers of the Detroit Free Press. Additionally, Higgins Lake was ranked the 6th most beautiful lake in the world by National Geographic.

In addition to the lake, the area boasts a variety of golf courses, including Forest Dunes Golf Club, which is ranked as the 28th best public golf course in the United States by Golf Digest. The course, tucked deep in the woods, is well known for its natural beauty and fast, sloping greens. Lodging and fine dining options are also available at the course.

The nearby Au Sable River also offers great opportunities for visitors, as the stream is one of the world’s best for fly-fishing, and has even attracted the likes of Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, and Thomas Edison. Additionally, the river is home to the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon, a grueling 120 mile overnight race that takes place every year on the last full weekend in July, and draws many spectators who will stay up all night, following the paddlers in the race. However, for a more casual experience, nothing beats filling up a cooler, renting tubes from a local canoe livery, and enjoying a relaxing float down the river.

Whatever your interests, the Higgins Lake area has it all. Whether on the lake, in the woods, or on the river, the area is filled with natural beauty that will have you coming back for years to come.
